Coaches,
Here’s a collection of training tools I’ve successfully used with my high school distance runners. Each comes with a brief description to help make the tools more useful.
Race Pace Chart – I use this mostly in the competition phase of the season to dial in accurate training paces and build race-day confidence. Being able to hit goal paces can inspire confidence in your athletes.
Training Intensity Chart – My longest-used tool, now adjusted to use 3200m (or estimated 3200m) as the aerobic intensity baseline. I laminate this chart and carry it with me all of the time.
Group Training Intensity Charts – This chart is a little more detailed than the standard intensity chart, and groups athletes by performance tiers (e.g., state qualifiers, JV, etc.) to add purpose to training. I’ve started to use this tool this season and I love it. I have some ideas for updates to the format of this chart in later versions.
“Stride Pace” Chart – This tool assigns specific paces to strides, which helps maintain biomechanical integrity. There are times when I am watching my kids do strides after a run and wonder if we are just wasting our time. Assigning specific paces to these strides is one method a coach can use to give purpose to the practice of running strides.
% Volume Based on Weekly Mileage – Helps structure workouts as a percentage of weekly mileage, supporting long-term progression. I have used this on occasion to make sure younger athletes aren’t biting off more than they can chew on workout days. This tool can help with long-term athletic development as workout volumes increase in step with weekly mileage.
Repetition Distances from “Minutes” – Converts time-based workouts (e.g., 6x (4:2) LT fartlek) into track-based sessions when needed. Although I like to stay off the track when possible, there are simply times when the track makes more sense than a fartlek-style workout. Use this chart to make your conversions. I still need a fancy name for this chart.
